TECNO Camon i launched: the Camon CM look-alike for the India market

TECNO Camon i launched: the Camon CM look-alike for the India market

TECNO Camon i: a rebranded TECNO Camon CM for the India smartphone market

It wasn’t too long ago that TECNO Mobile launched its first bezel-less smartphone, the TECNO Camon CM or TECNO Camon CMore. The device was also the OEM’s first product with an 18:9 aspect ratio.

With the newly launched TECNO Camon i, it seems as though the company has fully jumped on the 18:9 aspect ratio bandwagon in 2018.

The TECNO Camon i marks the introduction of the Camon series to the Indian market as it was only the “i series” that TECNO had in the market before now.

Design-wise, the Camon i looks pretty much like the TECNO Camon CM that was launched in Nigeria on January 9, 2018. As for other specifications and features of the device, find out under the headers below.

TECNO Camon i In-depth Specifications

Display & Design

I mentioned in the introductory paragraph that the TECNO Camon i looks largely like the TECNO Camon CM. In fact, I’d say they are the same, save for the name and some other minor features that differentiates the duo.

TECNO Camon i

The Camon i has the same dimensions, same button and keys placements, camera positions etc as the Camon CM. Furthermore, it comes in the same colour variants as the CMore; Champagne Gold, Blue and Black.

Still on the topic of semblance, the newly released Camon i comes with a finely polished aluminium metal body as well as a sleek and slim feel. Perfect machine for the hands!

TECNO Camon i

With an 18:9 aspect ratio, the device comes with a 2.5D curved 5.65-inch sized screen, an HD+ (720 x 1440 pixels) resolution and 285 ppi pixel density.

Performance, Storage & Memory

The TECNO Camon i uses a Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor which run at an average clock speed of 1.25GHz. The System-on-Chip under the hood is the MediaTek MT6737. On paper, this SoC is below par and in reality, MAY not cut the mustard as much as you would love it to.

The device has the same processor as the FERO Royale Y2 and TECNO Camon CM.

TECNO Camon i

Surprisingly, the Camon i comes beefed up storage properties; 3GB RAM and 32GB of built-in memory. That’s double of what the Camon CM launched with. This translates into improved multitasking, and faster launching and running of applications on the Camon i.

Camera

TECNO Camon i

The TECNO Camon i runs a dual camera system, one on the rear and one up front. Both sensors are of equal quality – 13 megapixels each and likewise, they both have their individual LED flashlights.

Battery, Connectivity & Software

The Camon i comes with a non-removable 3,050mAh Lithium Polymer battery, 50mAh more than the Camon CM. And according to what I’ve heard from several sources, the Camon CM can last more than a day on a full charge. So, expect nothing less from the Camon I.

The device comes with support for GSM, UMTS 3G and 4G LTE networks (Band 28 and 40).

TECNO Camon i

TECNO preloaded the Camon i with its native HiOS v2.0 which is based on Google’s Android Nougat v7.0 Operating System. With this OS, users of the Camon i will enjoy features like the Split-screen multi-window feature, efficient data saver and improved app shortcuts.

TECNO Camon i Price and Availability

The TECNO Camon i has been released in the Indian market at a price of Rs 8,999; equivalent to about USD 141 when converted. That is about the same price as the TECNO Camon CM when it launched, only that the Camon i costs a little more. It comes with better specs, remember?
TECNO Camon i
The device will be available in stores across India but it is unclear (and uncertain) if the device will be available or sold in other markets.

Verdict

Albeit sharing almost everything with the Camon CMore, the TECNO Camon i is a great mid-range smartphone. The smooth aluminium alloy body, 18:9 aspect ratio design and its almost bezel-less display are super appealing. With a decent amount of RAM and ROM, you really have no reason to worry about multitasking and storage of files or multimedia. The Camon i has got you covered.
However, the processor is quite mediocre and may lag a bit during usage. But trust the battery, it promises to bask in the long-lasting glory of the Camon CM (CMore).
Lastly, it comes at a pretty affordable price too. If you’ve got the cash and you are an Android Newbie, you should get the device.
On the flip side, if you happen to be a heavy smartphone user or a heavy gamer, you may want to opt for any other device with a faster processor and maybe more RAM and battery life.
