Vkworld T2 Plus – flip phones are coming back in grand style

Vkworld T2 Plus – flip phones are coming back in grand style

I remember when I was still a kid, the closest things to a smartphone we had then were “Flip phones”. I remember we called them “Open and Close” for obvious reasons – you flip them up to “open” the display and keypad, and flip down the upper part to “close the device.

Years later, technology and innovation ”happened”, and flip phones drowned in the shadows of smartphones. But just when we had totally forgotten about these flip phones, Chinese equipment manufacturer, Vkworld have decided to bring them back from the past and fuse in touches of modern day tech. The resulting product was the Vkworld T2 smartphone released in 2016.

However, it seems the company received quite a number of positive feedbacks from the Vkworld T2 in terms of sales, reviews and testimonies that the OEM has now released an upgrade to her first flip phone. The new device, the Vkworld T2 Plus comes with more refined features compared to its 2016 predecessor. Let’s see what new the company is bringing on board with this new phone. Will it raise flip phones from the dead? Will Vkworld’s flip phones stand a chance against the modern-day slim and bezel-less smartphones?

Vkworld T2 Plus In-depth Specifications

Display & Design

Vkworld T2 Plus

The Vkworld T2 Plus adopts the build structure of older flip phones from the past –a long, narrow yet bulky phone divided into 2 compartments with one part most times holding the screen and the other part; keypads, battery, camera and other components that make up the phone.

However, to stand out from archaic flip phones, Vkworld upped the T2 Plus by redefining the device’s design with features like dual screens, leather covering on the rear and interestingly, on the front too. The keypads are made out of leather too and the arrangement is nice. The navigation keys (home, return, and multitasking buttons) are all around the direction button and there is a button to easily change SIM preference.

When you flip down the part with the dual screens, the navigation keys are on the bottom bezels. The rest of the device is covered in smoothly polished metal and this metal-leather covering gives the Vkworld T2 Plus a premium feel and appearance.

The Vkworld T2 Plus comes with two 4.7-inch HD displays. The screen at the front functions when the device is flipped open, while the one on the rear an only be used when the device is flipped up/closed. Both screens cannot display simultaneously.

The idea of a flip phone with a dual screen setup is impressive, but this isn’t the first time (and instance) we are seeing such innovation. The image below is of the Samsung W2017, a flip phone with dual 4.2-inches display released by Samsung as far back as November 2016.

Performance, Storage & Memory

This device is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 system-on-chip, the same processor that you will find on majority of mid-range smartphones. The processor is based on the Cortex-A53 technology and comes with 4 cores that clock up to 1.3GHz frequency speed.

Assisting the SoC to ensure a smooth running of operations and multitasking is the 3GB of RAM on board and Mali T720 GPU. Built-in storage is capped at 32GB while the dedicated SD card slot allows expansion up to 64GB.

Camera

The Vkworld T2 Plus has an 8-megapixels shooter on the rear. The camera can be interpolated via software to 13-megapixels, shoots 1080p videos at 30fps and has some features that include Autofocus, HDR, Geo-tagging, Touch Focus, Panoramas, Dual LED support etc.

When you flip the device, a secondary 5-megapixels front-facing selfie camera is revealed. This selfie camera can also be upped to 8-megapixels via software interpolation.

Battery, Connectivity & Software

Vkworld T2 Plus

This flip phone comes out of the box running the Android Nougat v7.0 operating system and supports 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks. The Vkworld T2 Plus is kept in and running by a 2,500mAh Lithium-Ion battery, can give a talk time of up to 15hours but sadly, lacks the quick charge/fast charge feature. The leatherback cover is removable, likewise the battery. Meaning you can swap batteries in the case of low battery power.

Vkworld T2 Plus Price and Availability

For $259.99 –about N93,000 when converted to local currency– you can own a unit of the Vkworld T2 Plus and enjoy the goodness of dual displays, 13MP camera, Android Nougat OS, and relive the old flop phones moment.
